Residential Foundation Planting Design

Hillsborough, New Jersey

This residential planting design was created to transform an existing front foundation landscape into a vibrant, low-maintenance garden with year-round structure and seasonal interest. The design emphasizes layered planting masses, improved curb appeal, and a balanced composition that complements the home's architecture while remaining practical for long-term maintenance.

The planting palette consists of deer-resistant ornamental shrubs, flowering perennials, and ornamental grasses selected for their texture, bloom succession, and four-season appeal. Existing site features, including the mature Magnolia tree and natural boulder, were incorporated into the design to preserve the character of the landscape while creating a more cohesive planting composition.

Two ornamental tree options—a multi-stem Kousa Dogwood and a Japanese Snowbell—were developed to provide flexibility while maintaining the overall design intent. The result is a timeless landscape that delivers continuous color, layered textures, and enhanced curb appeal throughout the seasons.
